Stops
Old Fort Harrod
A full-scale fort on the site of Kentucky's first permanent settlement (1774), sheltering the little cabin where Abraham Lincoln's parents were married. Costumed crafters in season.
Perryville Battlefield
Kentucky's biggest Civil War battle, on fields so unchanged veterans would recognize them. Widely ranked among America's most haunted acreage; October's commemoration weekend brings the cannon back.
Penn's Store
Run by the same family since around 1850 — often called the country's oldest one-family store — with a legendary outhouse that gets its own festival. Creaky floors, cold drinks, perfect.
Danville
The Great American Dollhouse Museum (a scale universe — genuinely astonishing), Constitution Square, the McDowell House with its famously gross 1809 surgery story, and Burke's Bakery doughnuts since the 1920s.
If the day runs long: June fills Danville with free tubas for the Great American Brass Band Festival; October's Forkland Heritage Festival haunts its hollow.
